What is a Premicell?

A Premicell is an analogue or digital device installed at the customer’s premises to enable the customer to access a cellular network direct.

'Premicell' is a generic term and now encompasses other, multi-line, gsm routers [aka fixed cellular terminals / fct].

A premicell can be viewed as being the equivalent of an ordinary cellular telephone with the ability to connect an analogue device [telephone] to it. 

In its simplest form, the premicell is simply plugged into a mains point and an ordinary analogue telephone is plugged into the premicell. This means the customer goes off-hook and dials a number and the call goes via the cellular network.

 

 

What does a Premicell look like?

Premicells are individual units about the size of a paperback book for older types and about the size of a palm top for newer.

They are often installed near to the switch and are wired to an exchange / extension line port.

Premicells are cellular devices so, when installed correctly, should be nowhere near the switch!!!!

Other versions, chiefly ISDN types, vary in size & appearance and may well be rack mounted.

Why use a Premicell?

To illustrate, we will take a hypothetical user. [note: all costs are made up, Cellfone is a fictitious service provider].

Fred Bloggs Limited has a field staff of 20 people, all using Cellfone cellular phones.

Fred Bloggs is given preferential call charge rates because of the size of his account. This means that calls between his staff on their Cellfones are charged at 5p per minute instead of the usual [cellular to cellular] rate of  35p per minute.

However, when someone at the office calls one of these mobiles, Fred Bloggs is charged 30p per minute by BT. But, by using a Premicell connected to the Cellfone network at the office, calls are charged at 5p per minute: a significant saving.

To allow all office staff to use this Cellfone premicell means connecting it to the telephone system.

 

How is it used?

The premicell is a single device and may be found at a customer’s home/office simply plugged into the mains with a standard telephone on the desk. The user simply picks up the telephone and makes a call direct over the cellular network.

The premicell acts as an analogue exchange line and usually gives dial tone when the telephone goes off-hook.

When connected to a telephone system, the extension user goes off hook and dials the cellular number. The telephone system reads the number and gives the call to the premicell[s] which then carry the call over the cellular network to the called party.

How is the call routed?

The extension user dials a cellular number of 0777 123 456.

The system sees the number 0777 and sees it as being a code belonging to the Cellfone network. 

The system sends this call to a designated route where premicell[s] connected to the Cellfone network are installed.

The call goes over the Cellfone network without the extension user being aware of this complex routing.

If the premicell[s] are busy the call will then go out via the normal landline route complete with any indirect carrier access code being applied.

Where are the Premicells connected?

Trunk ports

The Premicell is connected to an analogue trunk port on the telephone system.

The premicell is mimicking the attributes of a normal analogue exchange line.

Extension ports

The Premicell is connected to an analogue extension port on the telephone system.

SoBus

The ISDN2 Premicell is connected to an SoBus on the telephone system.

The premicell is mimicking the attributes of a normal analogue exchange line.

This method is used where there is no analogue trunk ports available on an ISDN30 fed switch.

 

Can they be used for incoming calls?

Yes.

Again, routing programming on the switch would send these calls to an operator, extension group, individual or auto attendant.

 

What else can they be used for?

The main reason for using Premicells is to save money when making calls to your own cellular network and other cellular networks.

Other uses would include service failure backup. For example, instead of renting analogue trunks which sit there unused except in the event of an ISDN30 failure, premicells would be in use and would be available for use [incoming & outgoing] if your ISDN feed dropped out.

Interfacing with the cell link allows SMS messaging from the desk.
