Sir,
I am writing to you for some help.
I intend to make a large scale model of the ark royal (1970). I am trying to acquire the drawing to enable me to do this and was wondering if you or anyone on your site had any that may be of use.

20 Feb 2008   Hallo,
I am writing from Naples, Italy.
I am a member of the Tailhook Association (devoted to the study and support of carrier aviation) and I collect home made movies of old carrier action scenes; in my collection shines for its being amiss, the HMS Ark Royal.
I would be delighted to trade some of dvds I have, mainly USN & Australian Navy and French Navy carriers, I am interested in the period R09 operated the great Phantom & Buccaneer.
Is anybody interested in such a swap ?
Sincerely,
email Alfredo Maglione

20 Mar 2008   Hi

I just came across your site on the Ark, I was doing a search for my old squadron 824. Although I was not on the last commish I was with 824 on two tours...72-73 and 74-76. You have some amazing shots there, I still have my sqdn pic that was taken in '73 I think and brings back many memories of the lads and 2U1 mess.

Our mess was right under 3 wire so each time a landing took place it would shake the dust from the deck head.

I even recognized a couple of names going through all the pics. I was on board when Sailor was being filmed and was in an episode much to the pleasure of my mother at the time lol. Just a few years ago I got the Sailor dvd from ebay and it brought a tear or two to the old eyes I can tell ya.

Thanks for putting up the site it was a treat to see my old seakings. Sadly now she is gone and pictures of her are getting very rare, I have searched high and low of a pic of the upper hangar from the inside but the only way you can get pics now is from guys who served on her.

Just last year as I am a flight sim guy, a team of us got together and built the Ark IV for Microsoft flight sim FS9 [click here] and have just recently updated her for FSX where she is actually doing 20 knots off of Gib. I have the entire 824 seakings in the sim as well with all their markings, me a pilot.......naaaaaa I was just a NAM but am still proud to have served two tours on the old girl.

Feel free to pass my name around to see if anyone knew me

Thanks again

Rip Ex 824........2U1 mess.

Hi, John here,
Another year gone, another year older, more grey hairs, ha, ha.
Just wanted to say this to all ex-Ark Royal`s.

Thoughts are with those who are no longer with us.

Cheers everyone, have a great party.

The Grey Funnel line:
Cyril Tawney
[lyrics courtesy of www.sailorsongs.com]

Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea
The weary night never worries me
But the hardest time in a sailor's day
Is to watch the sun as it dies away
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line

The finest ship that sails the sea
Is still a prison for the likes of me
But give me wings like Noah's dove
I'll fly up harbour to the girl I love
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line

O, once my heart was wild and free
Like a flashing spar on the open sea
But now that spar has washed ashore
And come to rest at my true love's door
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line

Each time I gaze behind the screws
Makes me long for Saint Peter's shoes
I'd dance on down that Walker Shore
And rest in my true love's arms once more
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line

O Lord if dreams were only real
I'd feel my hands on that wooden wheel
And with all my heart I'd turn her round
And tell the boys that we're homeward bound
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line

I'll pass the time like some machine
Until the waters turn to green
Then I'll dance on down that walk ashore
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help.
I`ve been looking everywhere on the internet for where I can purchase a model/kit of the Ark Royal R09, so far in vain.
If anyone knows where I can get a model/kit of the Ark Royal I'd be eternally grateful.

Hello,

I am trying to verify a piece of information regarding the HM Ark Royal R09. I have been informed that the admiral of this ship, during some period from the early 1950s through the late 1960s, was Adm. Jesus Nasser, who, I have been told, was the third in command in the British armed forces (he died around 1967 in his mid-fifties, I believe). I have been searching in vain for any information about this Adm. Nasser without success, and I would be most grateful for any information you could provide me.

Please note that the information I have might be partly or completely incorrect; for example, he might have been commission to the Royal Ark but in a different capacity (lower rank).

Thankyou

Hi,

I was Able Seaman (Radar) Peter Dowling all those years ago. I was on the Ark from 1976 until the end, staying on her until she decommissioned. I then went to HMS Fisgard in Torpoint as a Junior Instructor for 2 years, and was given a choice of joining HMS Naiad in the February of 1981, or waiting until July and joining the Ardent. I chose the Naiad and then obviously the Falklands kicked off soon after and the Ardent didn’t come back. I left the Navy in January 1984, and joined the Police, spending 18 years in Cheshire, and the last 7 years in Thames Valley. I’m due to leave the Police in 3 months time. I can’t believe where all the years have gone, but I’ll never forget the great times and great mates in the mob.

Good luck and best wishes to all of you,

Pete

31 March 2009   Hullo there,

It's a "May-Day" from your hereditary enemy ( nowadays ex- , so, no problemo !).

Having the plan to paint the firing of a Sea Skua by the Lynx of HMS Glasgow against the ARA Alferez Sobral in 1982 , I'm desperately searching to contact the crew who did it in order to get same precious info ( Lynx  deco, meteo,altitude...).

The crew was (I suppose): Lt Cdr J.A. Lister & Lt R.J. Ormshaw ( Ormshaw is on the 824 Sqdn page  ).
Do you know, please, how to find them (or one of them ) ???

All the best.

21 May 2009   Hi,

My name is Sarah Hasler, my dad is Stephen Peter Hasler he was a Able Seaman (Radar) in the navy on the Ark Royal.
I am trying to get in touch with his friends from the Navy.
I'm not sure how to go about it, I have looked everywhere then my uncle saw this site and told me to try it so here I am.
I see the message from Peter Dowling [above], he done the same thing as my dad and at the same time, I was wondering if he knew my dad and if he knows of any other friends he had ??
My dad is soon to be 50: If anyone on this site knew Stephen Peter Hasler please get in touch, my email is sarahhasler@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks
Sarah Hasler

The Shorter Guy is my Farther in law Lt Cmdr John Eyton-Jones (Phantom Pilot) he later went on to be killed in action during the Falklands campaign.
We would also be interested if you have any photos of Lt Cmdr John Eyton-Jones as our 3 boys are obsessed by him.

With warm regards

hi ,

we have come into possession of a picture of the ark returning to Gus. There are 2 Wessex 5s on the Flight Deck, one in SAR colours. The ship is in procedure Alpha by the look of things and there are tugs with their water hoses running and shooting water.
it was done by a chap called Eric Roberts  we were just wondering if anyone could throw some light on this person or if it was the last time the Ark entered Gus before going for break up

Thanks

04 December 2009   Wow

Stumbled across this piece my history, often remembered and spoken of over dinner parties.. The Ark always evokes a lot of discussion, especially the sea stories of the 76 & 78 deployments.

When I have some more time I will post you some more images I have from that period.

After the Ark I was drafted to BRNC Dartmouth, Ariadne, a short spell on Ambuscade, finally leaving the RN at Drake just before Christmas 81..

Got a job in the Window industry for 11 years and have run my own company for the last 15..

Happy Memories...

Small Point of detail my Surname often miss spelt is Swinden (not Swindon) I also note a D "Hewis" is shown he was one of my oppos in 4V1 Mess.. I think this should Read "Lewis" [see Officers & Men - Supply Department].

Regards to anyone who remembers me.
